AI agents for law firms: what they are and what they actually do

Most legal AI tools wait for someone to ask a question. An AI agent watches one part of your firm and acts on its own. Here is how that works, and what it can and cannot do.

What an AI agent is

An AI agent is software that is given one job, one set of signals to watch and clear rules for when to ask a human. When something happens in its area, it acts without anyone opening an app or typing a prompt.

For a law firm, those signals are the things that come in all day: phone calls, web forms, emails, court notices, client texts, new rules and invoices. Each of them can be routed to an agent that knows what to do with it.

Agent vs. chatbot: the difference that matters

A chatbot or legal research tool is reactive. An attorney opens it, asks a question and gets an answer. If nobody opens it, nothing happens.

An agent is proactive. It notices the lead that called at 2 AM, the email that has waited 24 hours or the hearing date that is not on the calendar, and it acts on it. That is the gap most firms have: not a lack of information, but nobody watching everything at once.

The question is not "can AI answer my question?" It is "who is watching the phones, the inbox and the calendar at 2 AM?"

The 13 agents of a law firm

LawSquad groups its agents by the part of the firm they cover:

  • Business: the Intake Agent answers every lead, the Inbox Agent sorts email and drafts replies, the Marketing Auditor measures what each signed case costs, and the Manager Agent sends the partners a daily brief.
  • Operations: the Deadlines Agent double-checks every court date, the Client Updates Agent answers "how is my case going?", the Documents Agent chases missing records and the Billing Agent catches unlogged time.
  • Growth: the Reputation Agent asks happy clients for reviews and the AI Visibility Agent checks how ChatGPT and Google AI describe your firm.
  • Legal: the Cases Agent flags stalled matters, the Laws Agent tells you which cases a new rule affects and the Precedents Agent suggests similar decisions, always with the source.

You can see each one at work on the LawSquad home page.

How you stay in control

Three rules keep an agent safe inside a law firm:

  1. Human approval on anything sent in your name. Client messages, calendar changes and billing reminders wait for a tap until you decide a task can run on its own.
  2. A source for every claim. A law, a case or a deadline is always linked to the original document so an attorney can verify it.
  3. A second check, not the only check. Legal agents support your team's judgment. They never replace it, and LawSquad never gives legal advice.

Confidentiality matters too. Client data should be isolated per firm and never used to train AI models, in line with ABA Model Rules 1.6 and 5.3 and ABA Formal Opinion 512 on generative AI.

Where to start

Most firms start where money leaks fastest: leads that are not answered after hours. Read why personal injury firms lose cases after hours, then see how an AI intake agent fixes it.
